And welcome to our class blog!
In the many pages of this class blog you will be able to learn about the wonderful variety of manga and anime.
Each student has chosen their favourite manga and anime world ('sekai') and is blogging about the creator, the characters, the stories, and the artwork.
Students are regularly asked to present their newest blog posts to other members of the class and interact with each other's content using English. Examples of English speaking tasks include individual oral presentations in front of class, group presentations involving stories and scenes the students have created themselves, and information sharing, small group discussions, and dialogue exchanges between students who share similar or comparable manga and anime interests.
Students have been introduced to blogging software (exclusively in English, with English directions and an English-only interface) and have been prepared with several short blog writing workshops at the beginning of the semester. The focus has been on writing FIVE types of blog: Narrative blogs describing the storylines of their chosen manga and anime genre; Expository blogs explaining the characteristics, technique, popularity, and hidden meanings in their chosen genre; Ranking blogs listing their favourite characters or best stories and explaining the reasons behind the ranking; Comparison blogs comparing their chosen genre with similar or comparable artists, characters, storylines from inside and outside of Japan; and Quiz blogs testing reader's knowledge of their genre.
The expectation is that students will complete TEN blog posts on their page before the end of the 15 week semester. Each blog post must be approximately 200 words and contain pictures and/or video. All content must be in English, although Japanese subtitles are permitted in the videos.
The 100% coursework grade is composed thus: 40% class blog, 20% in-class oral presentations, 20% active participation, 20% extensive reading. The pass mark for this course is 60%. To achieve a pass mark, students must complete 10 blog posts of 200 words, read approximately 7~8 abridged graded readers, perform at least three oral presentations in front of class, and actively participate in a minimum of 12 out of 15 classes throughout the semester.
